Energy strike could threaten World Cup

South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) wants to go on strike as it does not see state-owned energy company Eskom meeting its pay rise demands. The industrial action, that could be joined by two other unions and comprise two-thirds of Eskom’s 32,000 staff, would likely disrupt power supply during the World Cup.
